Homeopathic remedies can prevent illness! Here's the protocol we use for preventing the flu.

Evidence that Homeopathic Remedies Can Be Used to Prevent Illnesses
Homeopathic remedies have a long history of being used preventatively to help avoid and lessen the effects of contagious illnesses. Way back in the late 1700's and early 1800's, founder of homeopathy Samuel Hahnemann successfully used preventative remedies for scarlet fever and cholera. Since then, homeopathic remedies have been used in many countries around the world to protect people from catching illnesses. Governments have even successfully used homeopathic remedies to reduce the spread of illnesses such as dengue fever and polio in Brazil, leptospiriosis in Cuba, and malaria in Kenya and India.
Homeopathic nosodes are prepared from disease components and have been found to be effective at preventing illness. For instance, a 2011 study of 600 children in Brazil found that children who received homeopathic flu/respiratory virus nosodes were protected against respiratory infection and flu over the next 12 months. The children who received placebo were diagnosed with flu or acute respiratory infections at rates 3x higher than those children who had received the homeopathic nosodes.
Homeopathic Flu Prevention Remedies: Influenzinum 9c and Thymuline 9c
In my family, beginning in the late Fall, we use homeopathic Influenzinum 9c and Thymuline 9c to boost our immune systems and prevent catching the flu. Both of these remedies are available through Dana Ullman's Homeopathic Family Medicine website. You may recognize that name, as Dana Ullman is the author of one of the best books on treating children's acute illnesses with homeopathy. The links below connect to where you can purchase these remedies on his site.
Influenzinum 9c: This is the influenza nosode, prepared with the 3 most recent strains of the influenza virus.
Thymuline 9c: This remedy is prepared from the thymus gland, which helps the body produce T cells for fighting infections.

My Family's Homeopathic Flu Prevention Protocol
Below are details about the flu prevention protocol I use for my family. When we use this protocol diligently, we seem to catch the flu less often and if we do catch it, the symptoms are more mild.
One Pellet = One Dose
Despite what the remedy bottle says, one pellet dissolved on the tongue is a sufficient dose for most people.
We make sure to take the remedy doses when there is a neutral mouth (no taste from previous food or drink), and wait to eat or drink anything (except water) for ten minutes after the dose.
Dose Timing for Alternating the Remedies
It is best to take the Influenzinum and Thymuline on different days, so the body has enough time to react to the dose before the next remedy is taken. For instance, I may take Influenzinum on Sundays and Thymuline on Wednesdays or some such.
Schedule for Dosing
We aim to take one dose each of the Thymuline and Influenzinum weekly for 4 weeks, and then take one more dose of each remedy a month later.
We usually start the remedy protocol in November and then can continue to take a dose ~once a month during times of high transmission. Flu season here in New Mexico is generally from ~November through April.
Dose Response
Most often, we don't feel any different right after taking these remedies. However, those who are more sensitive may notice a change (such as feeling slightly off or achy) after taking either of the remedies, especially on the subsequent doses. If that happens, it will work best to slow down the doses further (such as only taking them 1x or 2x monthly).
Antidotes
We avoid the following antidotes while using homeopathic remedies:
menthol (Vick's Vapo Rub, Tiger Balm, cough drops, etc)
essential oils (especially if being diffused)
recreational drugs and alcohol
coffee
For those who drink coffee daily, homeopathic can still be used as long as your coffee intake is steady. Make sure to take homeopathic remedies at a time of day when the effects of coffee have worn off. Remedy interference can happen, though, if you drink more coffee than usual.
Leftover Remedy Pellets
Dana Ullman has a new Influenzinum remedy available every year, based on the latest flu strains. Some homeopaths have reported that they’ve had success using this type of remedy for several years before buying a new version. We generally use the remedy for 2-3 years before purchasing a newer version.
Some homeopaths have reported that the Thymuline remedy is also helpful for allergies.

Keeping Track of Doses for Each Family Member
I like to use a chart so that I and my family members can keep track of our Influenzinum and Thymuline doses. You can download a copy of the chart to customize it for your family here:

Don't Forget to Optimize Your Vitamin D Levels, Too!
Vitamin D levels are also crucial for preventing illness and making illnesses more mild. Here's a post about that:
I hope this helps you and your family stay healthy and well this flu season!
