Homeopathic Remedies for Breastmilk Supply Problems

Updated: Nov 24, 2023

I've written previously about the number one tip for optimizing breastmilk production. However, when that doesn't work, there are several homeopathic remedies that are known to help when the mother has problems with her milk supply, whether with oversupply or undersupply. There are also remedies to help when the quality of the mother's milk is poor. These remedies can help to optimize the milk production.

Homeopathic remedies work best when they are selected to match each individual's specific symptom pattern, and not everyone with a certain condition will exhibit the same symptoms.

No one will exhibit every single indicator for any particular homeopathic remedy. Thus, when selecting a homeopathic remedy, it is best to NOT rule out remedies because of symptoms which are not present. Rather, it works better to focus on those symptoms that are present and determine which remedy best matches those symptoms.

8 Homeopathic Remedies for Breastmilk Supply Problems

ACONITE: Sudden excessive milk production OR sudden decrease in milk supply. May be brought on by shock, fright, or exposure to cold.

AGNUS CASTUS: Low milk supply. May be accompanied by postpartum sadness or depression. (If the postpartum depression is significant, don't forget about homeopathic Sepia!)

CALCAREA CARBONICA: Oversupply or undersupply of milk. The breasts may be swollen but there is little milk OR there may be an oversupply of milk. The milk may be low-quality and watery or bluish. The infant may not like the milk. Works especially well for mothers who are chilly, overweight, and/or sweaty.

DULCAMARA: Low milk supply. The breasts may be swollen and/or sore. The mother may be chilly.

IGNATIA: Low milk supply brought on by grief or emotional stress.

PHYTOLACCA: There may be overproduction of milk. The milk may be stringy or curdled, and it may taste bad. The breasts may be lumpy, hard, and tender. There may be pains while nursing, and the pains may change locations or wander to more distant parts of the body.

PULSATILLA: Oversupply of milk OR erratic milk supply. The milk may be watery and/or bluish. There may be pain while nursing; the pains may wander from place to place, and may include cramps in the abdomen or back while nursing. Works especially well for mothers who tend to be weepy and desire consolation.

URTICA URENS: The breasts may be swollen, yet the milk supply is slow to come in. The milk supply may vacillate between over- and under-supply, OR there may be no milk at all. There may be stinging or burning pains, and there may be a stinging or itching rash. Worse from cold.

Potency and Dosing Guidelines

30c potency is a good general-purpose potency for most mothers. If there is no obvious improvement within 3-4 doses, stop using the remedy as it is probably not the right one. Correct dosing is just as important as remedy selection, and can make a huge difference in the results. Please read my article about homeopathic dosing to better understand how often to give doses to increase the effectiveness of homeopathic remedies.
