Here's a recipe for natural and effective homemade tooth powder that we've been using for 10+ years!

Have you looked at the ingredients in your toothpaste? Let's dig into some of the unhealthy ingredients in Colgate Total toothpaste:
Fluoride: associated with lower intelligence and IQ scores in children
Sucralose and sorbitol: artificial sugars linked to weight gain, inflammation, negative impacts on the gut microbiome, liver damage, and glucose intolerance (precursor to diabetes)

Nope, not for my family! These are some of the reasons that we stopped using conventional toothpaste 15+ years ago.
Does Toothpaste Prevent Cavities?
As to the claims that toothpaste can prevent cavities, in the real food community, it is fairly well known that tooth decay is not caused by bacteria, but is actually an indication that the diet is lacking in nutrients.
Reports abound of people curing their tooth decay with a nutrient-dense real food diet emphasizing traditional foods such as raw dairy, bone broth, grassfed organ meats, and cod liver oil. My 16yo and 19yo teens have been raised on a real food diet alongside using homemade tooth powder for brushing teeth, and their dental health has been stellar.

How Teeth Remineralize
Remineralization is the natural way in which teeth can be cured of tooth decay. Remineralization can occur when the diet has enough vital nutrients to allow the tooth to rebuild itself. When there are enough nutrients in the diet, the saliva will contain plenty of calcium and phosphate which the tooth can use to remineralize.
RECIPE: Homemade Tooth Powder
When we first ditched conventional toothpaste, we tried a variety of commercially-available tooth soaps and powders. Finally, we settled on using a simple, inexpensive homemade tooth powder and have been doing so for 10+ years now.
This recipe is based on baking soda and white kaolin clay, with a little calcium added to potentially help keep teeth strong.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup baking soda
2 Tb white kaolin clay
OPTIONAL: 3 capsules calcium hydroxyapatite
OPTIONAL: 1 drop essential oil such as mint, lemon, orange, or cinnamon
Combine the baking soda and clay in a jar.
Pop open the calcium capsules and pour into the jar. Put a lid on the jar and shake to combine.
When it's time to brush your teeth, just wet your toothbrush and then sprinkle a bit of tooth powder on the bristles (or out some tooth powder in a small bowl and dip your toothbrush in the powder). Brush as usual.
